Nothin’ but net
NBA teams purchasing stakes in eSports teams is nothing new (the Philadelphia 76ers bought stakes in Dignitas and Apex, the Washington Wizards bought out Team Liquid, and so on), but a recent purchase by the Miami Heat has definitely turned some heads. The team bought a stake in Misfits, a group of gamers that are highly regarded in the Overwatch and League of Legends communities, among others. The Heat will do all the marketing, promotions, and branding for Misfits, and with Heat kind of money (considering the talent the NBA team had and currently has, it has to be considerable), that can really make a difference in how widespread Misfits becomes. Time will tell where it all ends up, but to the Heat and Misfits, it no doubt looks like a slam dunk.
