Game of the Year for Action Games
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
When it comes to games released in the blockbuster year of 2016, there aren’t many better or more deserving of awards than Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Featuring an epic and emotional story, the introduction of Nathan Drake’s brother, Sam, and a journey into a land far less magical than its predecessors, Uncharted 4 boasted beautiful visuals to compliment an incredible experience. All of Uncharted 4 worked, ranging from smooth gunplay to near perfect platforming to an entertaining and witty dialogue. Uncharted 4 also improved its online multiplayer, finally offering a competent competitive experience that left behind Uncharted 3’s balancing issues. Truly, Uncharted 4 is the “renaissance game” of 2016, scoring high points in just about every category.
Runner Up
Dark Souls III
Blending genres as usual, Dark Souls III makes our runner up for the best action game of 2016. Signaling the terminus of the Dark Souls trilogy, Dark Souls III provides the most beautiful Souls game to date, and it certainly offers a brutal experience. While not the best of the Dark Souls games, III still outshined most action games of 2016. Few games of the genre, too, can compare in sheer gameplay hours, where Dark Souls III could run close to 100 hours for 100% completion. When put altogether, Dark Souls III was an excellent action-RPG that has few peers in the genre. Its biggest flaw is that it released around the same time as Uncharted 4.
