Overwatch, Blizzard Entertainment’s entry into the class-based shooter genre, launched with twenty-one playable heroes and the promise of many more to come over the course of the game’s lifespan. Today, that number was bumped up to twenty-two as the company introduced the newest addition to the cast: Ana, a support-class sniper with a focus in healing. Using her “biotic” weaponry, Ana is able to directly heal and give various healing and attack boosts to her allies (and in the process prevent her enemies from healing at all).
In the overarching story of Overwatch, Ana was one of the founding members of the peace-keeping organization, and a deadly foe on the battlefield. After a hostage rescue mission against the terrorist group Talon went awry, Ana was seriously injured and left for dead (and with one less eye for her troubles). Deciding to keep her survival a secret, Ana became a bounty hunter and avoided many of the world’s ongoing crises over the years. Eventually, she chose to come out of “retirement” in order to protect her city, her allies in the newly reborn Overwatch, and her daughter (the game’s justice-raining rocketeer, Pharah).
More information on Ana will be revealed at San Diego Comic Con 2016 during a panel called “Behind the Scenes of Overwatch’s Newest Hero,” which will be hosted by Blizzard developers James Waugh, Michael Chu, and Arnold Tsang. A release date is yet to be confirmed.
